Changing Network Interface Card Priority in Win XP
Scribbled on Wednesday, January 9th, 2008I was just trying to play a game over net using Hamachi that creates a VPN between the players to provide access to each other.
Same applies for when you are having a Wired net connection and a Wireless net connection but you want to use one of them according to your priority, then you have to set their priority manually because Windows Xp picks up the Network card that had highest bandwidth specification.
Once crucial step was to change the priority of the Network Connection created by Hamachi over the physical LAN connection. So I searched a bit and find out that this is the solution,
- Right Click on the Network connection
- Properties
- Select Internet Protocol(TCP/IP) in General Tab
- Click on Properties > Click on Advanced
- Uncheck Automatic Metric
- Enter a numerical value in Interface Metric text box (1 is highest and 2,3,4,5…so on are lower in order).
- Do this for Each card
Here is a screenies walk through:

Good tip. I used it to put my work VPN device lower in priority so that my web surfing doesn’t go through the work network.
BTW, nice Windows skin on those screenshots. What style package is that one?

Thanks for the tips. Need this to make sure that my internet works thru the wireless instead of the looped-back wired LAN.
