BnW to Color

Scribbled on Monday, August 11th, 2008

Just another mediocre GIMP work by me !

BnW image

In Color

Do it Yourself !

  • Load the original image in GIMP

its teh original !

  • Select Fuzzy Select Tool

carefully look that the values are same !

  • Click on one of the petals, trial and error to get a good selection.

select the best possible area

  • Click on the Quick Mask button (Dashed Square) at the bottom-left of the below image to mask the image. Remember Red color masks the unselected area.

look the Quick Mask square at the bottom left

  • Now we see that only petals are selected with some part still deselected (in small red patches at the outer part). So now we have to remove that red color to select the desired part completely.
  • Switch to the PaintBrush Tool and swap the foreground color to white (remember white is used to remove the red color and hence it adds that part into selection). See below.

click on dual arrow arch beside the colors to swap colors

yeah now the foreground color is white

  • Start removing Red color with White Brush. This will include the part in selection.

yeah its time to remove unwanted red color

just a little removal more, zoom in to remove efficiently

nearly done !

  • Just a tip, you can quick traverse the image by clicking on the Four Arrowheads at the bottom-right. See pic below.

look at the mini quick traverse image !

  • Now the image is ready completely

its now completely ready !

  • Now click on Quick Mask Tool (at the bottom-left) again to go into selection mode and see what a perfect selection you have now.

perfect selection, albeit not so but still

  • Now its time to paint it, select Brush Tool and the color as #f9b532 with Mode as Saturation.

a color and a mode to select

  • Paint it furiously !

haphazard manner

a little modest

  • Now press “CTRL+I” to invert selection, its time to paint the middle part (I dunno what its called, lost botany lessons)
  • Select PaintBrush Tool with following values, color as #4c71c4 and mode as Grain Extract. Then paint the part.

middle part painted

  • You may have to set the proper Color Levels (Color > Levels) for the middle selected part to look it bright after painting it.
  • After a bit of tinkering I was able to modify it to a good extent using Blur Tool and Smudge Tool to make Boundaries less jagged and the middle part blended. This is what I got as a final image.

Final Image

  • So start experimenting for better effects. There is always a hidden talent in everyone for art.

    @Priya
Nope Photoshop is too costly for me. Am not a professional so don’t need a 30K software.
I used GIMP, free open source alternative for image manipulation

Yeah pages are removed now, its a complete post.
