Insults to the Root

Scribbled on Friday, February 13th, 2009

Do you love to throw a volley of mordant remarks whenever some asslol tries to login as root in your Linux box’s terminal. Or perhaps you are on S&M side then you may enjoy chided for entering wrong passwords yourself. Yeah I love to see how terminal can bash me for human error. They say machine do not err but human do.

So here is a neat trick to achieve above. Of course it’s completely useless for morons who see in grey.

  • First step is to open sudoers file (/etc/sudoers)
sudo visudo
We have used visudo because it will prevent any undesired mistakes in sudoers file which may trouble you if not edited properly. If you do any mistakes then it will prompt you about discarding the changes. Just a precautionary measure. Of course if you are a vi user then you will find editing this file as a piece of cake.
  • Now reach to the end of line starting with Defaults

  • Now press A key (to append at the end) and enter “, insults”

  • Press ESC key and then “SHIFT + ZZ” to save and close file successfully
  • Now try to enter a wrong sudo password and see what happens :D

  • Have fun !

pretty cool! this makes me laugh.

i wish i wasn’t afraid to try this in my box.

if my tech level is good enough with admin task, i’ll probably do it.
